Harry Manx performs on Quadra Island

Harry Manx performs in Herons on Quadra Island

Harry Manx has spent years fusing eastern musical traditions with the blues. He switches effortlessly between guitar, harmonica, banjo and the mohan veena, a 20-stringed instrument invented by Manx’s mentor Vishwa Mohan Bhatt.

Manx blends Indian folk melodies with slide guitar blues, adds a sprinkle of gospel and some compelling grooves to create his unique “mysticssippi” flavour. He quickly envelops the audience with his warm vocals and the beautiful melodies of his original songs. It’s hard to resist, easy to digest and keeps audiences coming back for more.

Experience Harry Manx live September 15 and 16 at the Heriot Bay Inn. Seats are $79 and include a two course dinner; there are a  limited number of show-only seats available at $59. Call the Heriot Bay Inn to reserve your seats: 250.285.3322.

Fin de Fiesta Flamenco

Fin de Fiesta Flamenco

Fin de Fiesta Flamenco! in Herons on Quadra Island

Fin de Fiesta Flamenco dance and music ensemble presents SALVAJE, an untamed new production that explores the wild, unrestrained side of one of the world’s most passionate and intense art forms: flamenco. To the south of Spain and back again, Fin de Fiesta will leave you breathless, with the pulsing rhythms of flamenco beating in your heart.

This amazing evening is happening Wednesday August 18 in Herons. Doors at 8:30, dance & music begins at 9. $15 per person: limited seating; reserve. Pre-show dining optional: reserve.

Though they come from France, Cuba, and Canada, Fin de Fiesta’s core members all spend much of the year in Spain, collaborating with and drawing inspiration from the world’s best flamenco singers, dancers and guitarists. Flamenco in Spain draws from many cultural and historical influences, but the members of Fin de Fiesta often find themselves most drawn to the raw and improvisational “gitano” style that emerged 200 years ago from the gypsy culture of southern Spain.

The show’s name, SALVAJE, means “wild,” and pays homage to flamenco’s rough-and-tumble origins.

The searing vocals of Alejandro Mendia (Noces Gitanes, France) are accompanied by the intricate guitar arpeggios of Dennis Duffin (Ventanas, Canada) and the haunting flute melodies of Lara Wong (Vancouver/Madrid). Dancer Lia Grainger (2017 Certamen New York International Flamenco Competition finalist) brings the stage to life with fierce and sensual choreographies and improvisations and Hanser Gomez (Cuba) holds down the rhythm on cajon. Deborah "La Caramelita" (Noces Gitanes, France) will also join the ensemble as a special guest dancer for this tour only.

Knacker's Yard in the Pub

Knacker's Yard

Celtic Music night in the HBI Pub! Hailing from Victoria, British Columbia (Coast Salish Territories), Knacker’s Yard has been arranging and performing traditional Irish, Scottish, English, Australian, and original music since 2013.

The energy of the band’s expansive repertoire ebbs and flows with drive and dynamism, as they pay tribute to, and take inspiration from, legendary predecessors like The Dubliners, The Pogues, Planxty, The Clancy Brothers, The Chieftains, and The Wolfe Tones. Intricate lead work, driving rhythms, finely crafted arrangements, and careful attention to slow airs and ballads makes for a listening experience that is both powerful and enduring.

Wednesday July 11 in the HBI Pub! $10 at the door.
