October 13th: 45,000 Kilometres South: Our 2-Year Journey Driving the Pan American Highway with Slow Roamers – Alex & Meg
Over two years, Alex and Meg drove the length of the Americas, following (kind of) the Pan-American Highway from the Arctic to the southern tip of South America (Fin del Mundo). This talk shares the realities of long-term life on the road — the challenges, the unforgettable memories, and the moments that changed them along the way.
Alex and Meg are the storytellers behind the Slow Roamers, a travel and filmmaking duo documenting their overland journey around the world on YouTube. Living and traveling full-time by vehicle, they focus on slow travel, self-reliance, and what it really takes to chase big adventures beyond the map.
October 20th: Rebecca Spit; A short story of its history & ecology with Luna Loiseau-Tremblay
Rebecca Spit Provincial Park is arguably the most well known nature attraction on Quadra. For tourists, it is a must see but for locals, the Spit is woven into the fabric of our community. This talk aims to tie in some history of its significance in our community, while weaving in the importance of its ecology and appreciation of nature.
Luna Loiseau-Tremblay is a naturalist, and has been a local of the community of Quadra Island for 40+ years.
October 27th: Perspectives of oil & gas workers on climate action & a potential energy transition with Isaac Bell
Based on interviews conducted for a master’s thesis, this presentation will highlight a range of viewpoints held by oil and gas workers in Alberta concerning the future of their industry. Asking the question, what common ground might exist between workers and ‘environmentalists’ which could lead to material changes?
Isaac has an MSc in Environmental Sustainability and currently lives in the Cowichan Valley (on Quw’utsun Territory). You may find him working at a bookstore or running on trails.
