A Glimpse into History

The Heriot Bay Inn, fondly known as “The HBI” to locals was first built in 1896 by Hosea Bull. It burnt down and was rebuilt two more times. Today, you’ll still find much of the original historic May 1912 structure… The warm wood paneling and single-pane windows found in the office & lounge are a few of the historic clues. The main wing of the original Inn is now the lounge, office, and lobby.

This charming hotel has been a cornerstone of the Quadra Island community for over a century. Originally built to serve the burgeoning logging industry, The Inn has evolved into a beloved destination for visitors, the rustic charm and warm hospitality have welcomed countless guests, from island residents to international tourists, all seeking a slice of Quadra Island’s serene beauty.

Current ownership

The Heriot Bay Inn was purchased November 1, 2008 by a group of local visionaries. This group refers to itself as “community custodians”. There are 26 Custodians: business-minded old hippies and folks with a peace-loving attitude that are interested in building and running a business which is successful financially, emotionally and spiritually. Why “custodians”? In the words of custodian Lois Taylor, “because there is a larger force than us in the history of the property. We understand this part of our community needs to be cared for, not through a sense of ownership, but rather like that of an heirloom to future generations.”

The Custodians provide economic and analytical diversity similar to Quadra Island as a whole. The concept has proven successful in the last 16 years of cultivating this enterprise. A variety of entertainment and events through the island’s four seasons brings life to the Inn all year round for all people to enjoy.

We invite all to share in and enjoy our dream. We’re here, we’re real and we’re ready to enjoy all the adventures that come our way!
