Orcas

Also known as killer whales, are frequently seen hunting and playing in the surrounding waters off Quadra Island, both resident and transient orca pods can be spotted, each displaying different hunting techniques and social behaviors.

Humpback Whale

The Humpback whale is another highlight of the waters around Quadra Island and Desolation Sound. These gentle giants are known for their acrobatic breaches and soulful songs, humpbacks are a favorite among local and visiting whale watchers. They migrate through the area between the months of May to October, offering spectacular displays!

  2. Male humpback whales create and sing songs that can be heard up to 20 miles away

  4. Humpback whale tails can be as wide as 18 feet
  5. The scientific name for humpback whales, Megaptera, translates to “big-winged” in reference to their long pectoral fins
